In addition to a Master of Public Health degree, he has completed training at the Centers for Disease Control and the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). Coursework includes epidemiology, parasitology, Combat Medical Specialist, Medical Management of Biological Warfare Casualties, and Special Forces Medical Sergeant. As a Sergeant First Class in the US Army Reserve, he has supervised and trained medical personnel, and has served as Ambulance Platoon Sergeant, Medical Intelligence NCO, and Medical Treatment Platoon Sergeant. He served active duty in Iraq 2003-2005.
